What is Co-op?

Members of York Education at Home (YEAH) work together to run a Friday morning Co-op program at Hope Fellowship Church in Rock Hill, S.C. Our Co-op offers fun classes and the opportunity to build friendships and connections with other Christian homeschooling families. This program is designed to supplement what you are teaching at home. Members may register for Co-op each spring AFTER successfully joining YEAH.

  • 24 week program (Aug - April)
  • 2 semesters - 12 weeks each
  • Friday mornings
  • All families have a parent volunteer weekly
  • NOT a drop-off Co-op - a parent/guardian must remain on campus
  • Programs for infants through 12th grade students

  • Two one-hour class times each week
  • Fee: $75 + $16 per student supply fee (2024-2025)

Co-op Schedule

9:30 a.m. - 9:50 a.m. ANNOUNCEMENTS / SHOW AND TELL
9:55 a.m. - 10:55 a.m. 1ST HOUR CLASS
11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. 2ND HOUR CLASS
12:00 p.m. OPTIONAL PICNIC LUNCH @ CHERRY PARK*

*Some families pack a lunch and gather at Cherry Park after Co-op.

Co-op Classes

Students registered for Co-op will participate in 2 classes each week. Each class will be taught by a team of teachers. Students will have the same team of teachers for a whole semester, and those teachers will determine the subject(s) taught. Grades may have a different team of teachers and different subjects each semester. Parents volunteer to teach and/or assist in each class. Classes are offered for children age 3 through 12th grade. We ask that preschoolers attending class be potty trained. Nursery is provided for children ages 2 and under.  

  • 1st Hour Classes:
    • Several subjects per semester (12 weeks total)
    • Students attend the class for their age/grade level
    • Past Class Offerings - Boomwhackers, Madlibs, Recorder, Snap Circuits, Spanish, Eric Carle, Beatrix Potter, Art Classes, Decades, Chickens, The Titanic, Chocolate, Pinewood Derby, Insects, Ornithology, Archeology, US History, Bridges, Budgeting, Science Classes, Bucket Drumming, Cooking Classes, etc.
  • 2nd Hour Classes:
    • 1 Subject per semester (12 weeks total)
    • Students choose between several classes
    • Students may choose a different class each semester
    • Classes have a broader range of grade levels (Pre-K- Kindergarten, 1st-5th grade, 6th-12th grade).
    • Past Class Offerings - PE, Drama, Lego Club, Art, Yearbook.

Parent Volunteers

We are a volunteer run Co-op. That means that we need lots of parent involvement to make Co-op happen. Every family that signs up for co-op is required to have at least one parent onsite volunteering during co-op. Students may not be brought weekly with another family. Each week you as a parent will be placed on a schedule to either teach or assist in a class. You will also be placed on one of our volunteer service teams. Husband and wife members are welcome to share these responsibilities. Please note that parents may have time slots when they are not volunteering. There is a designated parent room to gather in during free time.

Teaching / Assisting Teams:

Teams of 2-3 parent volunteers work together to plan and teach one 12 week class each semester. When a team member is not teaching, they will act as an assistant to the teacher(s). We give our Teaching Teams flexibility in how they plan and arrange their class. More information about these teams can be found on our Co-op Registration Form. 

Volunteer Service Team:

Each family also serves on a Volunteer Service Team in addition to their Co-op Volunteer Roles in the classroom. We have divided the roles needed for co-op to run smoothly and created teams. You can be on more than one team if you would like, but you are only required to be on one. Most volunteer duties can be done within the hours of co-op. Some duties require people to come early, to stay late, or require outside planning. The Volunteer Service Teams are as follows:

  • Management Team
    • Co-op Coordinators (make the schedule, manage the teams, and make decisions)
    • Substitute Coordinator (is the point of contact for anyone who is out each week, establishes a system for substitution management, checks attendance prior to announcements each week to be sure all classes are covered, and finds people to fill any vacant slots).
    • Supply Manager (knows which supplies we have and where they are, orders more as needed within the budget, keeps supply room organized).
    • Bookkeeper (works with the treasurer to keep records of spending and to assist with reimbursements).
  • Opening Team*  arrives by 8:45 am to open the doors, unlock classrooms, change thermostats, roll out the carts, set up the welcome table, put out class signs, and assist with other opening tasks. 
  • Check In Team* will begin check-in for co-op members at 9:00 am and will remain until just before 10:00 am when the first hour safety team member arrives in the lobby (at the end of announcements). This is a team of two people who take turns running check-in and will fill in for each other as needed.
  • Events Team**  meets during 1st or 2nd hour to plan the YEAH events that will take place this year. The events team members help with planning, preparing, advertising, and running several events for the year. 
  • Safety Team each member is assigned a spot during their non-classroom hour.  Lobby assignments involve sitting at the table, monitoring who is entering and exiting, and updating the attendance log of who is present in the building. Hall monitors will check each classroom at the beginning of the hour to be sure that each room has two adults, then they will remain in the hallway to escort students to the restroom or provide other support as needed. Each hallway monitor, the lobby monitor, and a co-op coordinator will have a walkie talkie to allow communication across the building when needed. 
  • Cleaning Team* begins during the last 5 minutes of 2nd hour and finishes generally 10-15 minutes after 2nd hour. This crew follows the cleaning list (empty waste baskets in classrooms, wipe down bathrooms, clean up spills, sweep the gym and entryway, clean glass doors at entrance, etc.)
  • Closing Team* members go through the building after everyone is out of the classrooms to reset the thermostats, check for forgotten items, and make sure the rooms look as expected. They lock all classrooms and turn off the lights. They will then check bathrooms, hallways, the gym floor, and the lobby to make sure nothing was missed before turning off lights and locking the front doors around 12:30 pm. Closing team may need to do minimal cleaning. 

* Parents are responsible for their children prior to the 1st hour class and following the 2nd hour class. if your service team duty falls outside of those times, you will need to hand responsibility of your children over to someone else for that time frame.

** Events are available to all YEAH members, so these meeting times will be open to any interested adult YEAH members (not just co-op members). Team members are not required to attend all planned events, but they must have the necessary number of team members in attendance or recruit people to fill the needed volunteer slots.

Student Responsibilities

Students should engage in classes and show respect at Co-op. We ask that they limit talking and pay attention during announcements and classes. One key aspect of Co-op is socializing and building friendships. There is plenty of time to do so outside of these scheduled times. Our Co-op follows the YEAH Code of Conduct spelled out here. Please read the code of conduct to your children. It applies to both adults and children. Co-op should be an environment that lovingly admonishes one another in Christ to become more Christ-like, especially in the way that we interact with one another.

Unregistered Children

Participating families may have children that are not homeschooled. If a situation arises where a family has an unregistered child with them while at Co-op, they should inform the check-in table upon arrival. The unregistered child must remain with their parent/guardian at all times.

Co-op Registration 2024/2025

  • Step 1 - Register for York Education at Home and pay the fee. Please allow 5-7 business days for your application to be processed. New applications take longer to process than those of returning members.
  • Step 2 - Receive your Welcome Email from yeahmembershipcoordinator@gmail.com. It will include instructions on how to register for our Co-op.
  • Step 3 - Complete the Co-op Registration process and pay the fee.
  • Step 4 - A parent from each family will sign-up for a weekly volunteer slot & a Volunteer Service Team.
  • Step 5 - Select 2nd hour classes. Over the summer you will receive a link to select your student's preferred 2nd hour class. Classes will be filled in the order in which they are received. If a class reaches capacity, students will be given a choice of the other available classes being offered.
